How to get more Google reviews for your shop (without breaking the rules)
Before walking through your door, most new customers look at your Google listing. The number of reviews, the rating and your replies weigh on their decision, and on your visibility on Google Maps. Here's how to get more, by the rules.
Why reviews matter so much
Reviews work on two fronts: they reassure customers who don't know you yet, and they're among the signals Google uses to rank businesses in local results and on Maps.
What Google forbids
Google's rules on reviews are clear:
- No reviews in exchange for something: discounts, gifts or free stamps in return for a review are prohibited.
- No fake reviews, whether written by you, your friends and family or a service provider.
- No cherry-picking: you must not discourage negative reviews or only ask satisfied customers.
The risk: reviews removed, or even restrictions on your listing. In France, fake reviews are also a misleading commercial practice.
Methods that work
- Simply ask, at the end of a good experience: “If you enjoyed it, a review would really help us.”
- Make it easy: a QR code at the till or a direct link to your listing.
- Ask at the right time: right after the visit, while the experience is fresh. A digital loyalty card can automatically send the invitation after the visit, to all your customers.
- Reply to every review: it shows you're listening and encourages others to write.
Responding to negative reviews
A well-handled negative review can become a strength. Reply quickly, politely, without lengthy justifications: thank them, acknowledge the problem if it's real, and offer to discuss it directly. Future customers mostly read your replies.
A good pace
A few recent reviews every month beats a burst followed by months of silence. An automatic request after each visit, sent to every customer, creates that steady flow.
